Mt. Matterhorn Expedition Switzerland 2023

Mount Matterhorn (4478m), also known as Mount Cervino is located in the border between Switzerland and Italy and overlooks the Swiss resort town of Zermatt to the northeast and the Italian town of Cervinia to the south. A very popular goal among mountaineers, it is probably the most photographed mountain in Europe. This 10-days guided climbing tour is an instructional trip that leads you to the Matterhorn summit. As you may know, this mountain is the dream of every mountaineer because its pyramidal shape is the icon of Alpine peaks. Although it is a gorgeous mountain, the ascent is not that easy. In fact, it requires a very hard physical preparation and some previous background in high altitude.

Please note that Matterhorn is not suitable for beginners. Previous mountaineering experience (including technical skills) is required. Climbing with HST Adventures will improve the chances of reaching to the Europe's most coveted summit: Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn by joining with one of the experienced veteran guides (Everest, K2 and many more 8000m summiteer).

Day 01: Arrival at Geneva and Drive to Zermatt via car or train

Arrival in Geneva, Switzerland Airport and drive to Zermatt. Our Mont Matterhorn expedition starts with an evening meeting between you and your mountain guide at Zermatt Hotel. Your guide will go through the plan for the week and answer any questions you may have. We will also check your equipment.

Day 02: Hike to Hornli Hut from Zermatt

Today you and your mountain guide will take a cable car up to Schwarzsee. From here it is about a 2.5-hour walk to the Hornli refuge, where we will stay overnight before beginning our ascent of the Matterhorn the next day. Most climbers will probably opt to take the lifts from Zermatt to Schwarzsee and follow the well-marked and maintained trail from there to the hut/hotel. From Schwarzsee to the hut is about 700 meters of vertical and takes about two hours. If you choose to climb from Zermatt add another 950 meters and 3 hours to the time.

Day 03: Summit Matterhorn - Summit day

You will leave the Hornli refuge between 3-4am in the dark with head torches on. The summit climb is with a smaller guide to client ratio (1:1) and will take 4-5 hours to complete. The steeper sections are equipped with fixed cables. The descent will take approximately as long as the ascent. When you return to Zermatt you will have a celebratory late lunch before making your way back to Zarmatt with your mountain guide.

Day 04: One day additional for the summit attempt (if required)

One Additional Day for contingency and weather.
